Take a deep breath and relax with our asana-based yoga practice. TexasFITT’s resident yogis will guide you through poses and movements designed to stretch the connective tissues of the body, exercise your bones and joints, rejuvenate your internal organs and of course encourage flexibility, too. You’ll build body awareness, balance, core strength, and of course strength and endurance too.
What to Expect in Your First Yoga Class
Part of the instructor’s job is offering gentle guidance to get you into the proper position for each pose, so wear clothing that lets them see the lines of your body. Most women wear yoga pants or leggings and a full-coverage tank top; men sometimes opt to wear long basketball-style shorts. Keep in mind that you’ll be doing a lot of bending and twisting, including plenty of time with your head lower than your hips, so dress so you’ll be comfortable in any position.
Beginners usually gravitate toward the back of the room, but try to get a spot in the middle if you can: That way, whichever way you turn your head, you’ll have someone to watch. Many people feel shy in their first yoga class, but we promise that the only person who might be focused on you is the instructor — everyone else will be busy with their own workout!
If you come to a few yoga classes and find yourself really getting into it, you’ll want to buy your own yoga mat. Always bring a towel, too — you might be surprised by how much you sweat. Everybody’s flexibility and balance are a little different, so sometimes aids like yoga blocks (small, sturdy rectangles made of foam), straps, or thick, padded blankets are helpful for getting yourself into the proper position. The instructor will provide these and let you know when and how to use them, although of course, you’re also welcome to bring your own.
